    Germany

OK, so we made it here just fine. The flight was good, nothing special, got to Germany at 8:30am and were a bit suprised to see people drinking lowenbrau at 8:30 in the morning... turns out it isn't unusual. (sorry for the typing if I am doing a bad job, just got back from Oktoberfest....many beers)

OK, so we did the castles, (howenbschwangau (sp?) and neuschwanstein - think Disney) they were fun, we got rained on. many good pictures. That was two days ago.

Yesterday was the salt mines in Saltzburg Austria. They wer fun, many good pictures. sorry, using the german spelling for 'were' I guess... We had many beers at a monastery in Saltzburg... So, do you thinkit is crazy to drink 3 liters of beer? try doing it two days in a row. The monks make some fine bier.

OK, so today was Oktoberfest. Got into Munich aroubd 11:00 I think. Watched the Glockenspiel, climbed a clock tower, dashed off to drink bier. Tried to hook up with a couple of other americans we met... failed miserably. Oktoberfest is a pretty crazy busy place if you haven't been here. So, the point here is we pre-paid for 6 people at Oktoberfest, which means we had many Euros to spend. between the four of us, it turns out we can comfortably drink 10 liters of bier and still find out way home in a torrential down pour. Oh actually it was 3 people.. two of us were responsible for 7 liters though. Anyway, good times were had by all, and of course we have many good pictures. Some probably won't get published... If I can help it anyway.

OK, well off to sleep/pass out. More to write later.

None of the castles had a moat, nor did they have crazy demon infested Nazi SS agents trying to shoot us or eat our brains...

More of the locals than I expected were wearing Dirndals (the girls outfits - similar to the 'Swiss Miss' hot chocolate) and Lederhosen (leather pants, suspenders, maybe traditional hat and shirt.)

Oktoberfest was a great time. I think we all were pretty amazed that everyone could be as drunk as they were (and I mean pretty much everyone, not just us - pictures to follow regarding that) and still be really happy drunks. We saw one guy get hauled out by police, though I don't think we know why. Those are the sort of subtleties that are hard to pick up in a foreign language. Otherwise almost everyone was extremely happy to have been there, including a friend we made who claimed to have had 13 liters while in the tent (he was wearing a 'Superdrinker' t-shirt -- similar to 'superman' t-shirts) which if he was telling us the truth, is remarkably appropriate. Getting the waitresses to bring you 13 liters would be a pretty amazing feat with the number of people in any given tent which they have to serve... We had a tendency to make friends with very drunk Germans who spoke little English pretty easily. We just seemed to atract them. It was fun.

Did any of the castles have a moat?  I cant get the vision of castle wolfenstein mixed with disney characters out of my head.  Everytime you type octoberfest I think of guys (or you) with steins of beer and suspenders and the women with the plaid skirts dancing (like in the movie National Lampoons European vacation).  That sounds like a great time.

Remember the bed pans are not for drinking; of course after 7 liters of beer I can definitely think of a use for them.
