    Geneva to Italy (Zermat)

OK, so it may be taking me a while to get the blog updated, but on to the next leg...

Anyway, we left Geneva on our way to Zermat. The train transfers were easy, and it was nice to get out of French speaking parts of Switzerland and back into German speaking small towns. Zermat is most famous for being the nearest town to the Matterhorn as well as not allowing cars in the town. Pretty much any vehicles in town are electric with the exception of the garbage trucks... It is a nice little town - think ski resort sorta.

So, after getting there we stowed our luggage in lockers and caught the bus to the bottom of the gondola. It actually takes three gondolas to get from Zermat up to the Kleine Matterhorn. The last Gondola gets you up to around 12,500 feet. From there you can either do some skiing year round, or catch an elevator up a couple of hundred more feet to 12,736 feet. The view is pretty impressive from there; the Matterhorn itself is still 3000 feet higher. We made it up to the top of the elevator just in time to catch the last elevator to the top, get some pictures, and take the last elevators and gondolas back down. The weather was beautiful, perfectly clear, and something just below freezing. There were hundreds of skier kids coming back off the mountain and the gondolas were packed. The hotel in Zermat was probably the best we stayed at and most of the pictures are taken from our balcony.

From Zermat we caught the trains into Italy, stopping in Milan, then Florence, then on to Sienna. Not to discourage folks, but we were surprised at how bad the air pollution was, how dirty the trains and train stations were, and how bad the train stations worked. Of course this is all relative to Germany and Switzerland... The pollution was probably similar to Seattle on a worse than average day, but the trains and public transportation was still far better than Seattle. Anyway, more about Italy next time...

    Germany, Austria, Switzerland

OK, so now that we have recovered from Oktoberfest, we left Munich, headed down south to the little town of Mittenvald. It seems like a nice place to spend Christmas as it is nestled at the bottom of what we think is the tallest mountain in Germany. Just close enough that a good avalanche should be able to completely cover the whole place. Anyway, nice place, but it was really just an overnight stop to make sure that the next day only required about 8 hours of train rides to get to Interlaken, Switzerland.

So, we transferred trains something like 5 times in a whole range of samll towns in Austria and Switzerland... Our schedule only gave us about 3 minutes at one stop, 9 at another. It is really nice that they hold the trains when they know you will be late... (FYI, in case I type a Z instead of a Y someplace it is because these funkz European kezboards switch the two letters)

Anyway, Interlaken is the clsoest town to the tallest mountain in Switzerland, Jungfrau. They call it the 'Top of Europe' but we found out today that Mount Blanc in France is the 'Roof of Europe' and is somewhere near 2000-3000 feet taller. Not really sure what is up with that. Anyway, the crazy Swiss railroad builders built a railroad almost to the top of Jungfrau. You can ride a bus, then train, then Cog train up to somewhere around 11,300 feet up, all year round. We had a mostly sunny day for it at least. I don't think I would do it if the weather sucked...

From Interlaken, we came to Geneva yesterday. Had to buy Linda a swiss watch while we were here... We spent an hour or so out on Lake Geneva on a little boat tour to see the famous houses and such, then headed to Lusanne (40 minutes away by train) to see the largest Cathedral in Switzerland and wander around the town. Geneva itself is famous for all of the Swiss banks and such. Lake Geneva is probably mostly famous for the song 'Smoke on the Water' which my mom will remember very well as the song Paul and Kenny learned right after 'Cat Scratch Fever', the Smoke on the water was actuallz written about burning down a hotel on the other end of the lake in Montreaux.

OK, we are off to Zermat tomorrow, then down into Italy. We have lots of pictures, but I don't have any easy way to upload them from public computers, so they will have to wait till I can get on Shannon's laptop, or till we get home most likely...

    Talk to y'all later.

    Germany

OK, so we made it here just fine. The flight was good, nothing special, got to Germany at 8:30am and were a bit suprised to see people drinking lowenbrau at 8:30 in the morning... turns out it isn't unusual. (sorry for the typing if I am doing a bad job, just got back from Oktoberfest....many beers)

OK, so we did the castles, (howenbschwangau (sp?) and neuschwanstein - think Disney) they were fun, we got rained on. many good pictures. That was two days ago.

Yesterday was the salt mines in Saltzburg Austria. They wer fun, many good pictures. sorry, using the german spelling for 'were' I guess... We had many beers at a monastery in Saltzburg... So, do you thinkit is crazy to drink 3 liters of beer? try doing it two days in a row. The monks make some fine bier.

OK, so today was Oktoberfest. Got into Munich aroubd 11:00 I think. Watched the Glockenspiel, climbed a clock tower, dashed off to drink bier. Tried to hook up with a couple of other americans we met... failed miserably. Oktoberfest is a pretty crazy busy place if you haven't been here. So, the point here is we pre-paid for 6 people at Oktoberfest, which means we had many Euros to spend. between the four of us, it turns out we can comfortably drink 10 liters of bier and still find out way home in a torrential down pour. Oh actually it was 3 people.. two of us were responsible for 7 liters though. Anyway, good times were had by all, and of course we have many good pictures. Some probably won't get published... If I can help it anyway.

OK, well off to sleep/pass out. More to write later.
